Tumblr Fashion
In today’s modern day society everything seems to be a form of social media. Turning to the Internet has been the prime objective for many different magazine and literature outlets. Within one night, you could be viral, an idea can be viral, and a concept spreads like wildfire with the power of the Internet. It’s become the single most used marketing method in the world with the ability to reach 2,267,233,742 users per day all around the world. Fashion is just another category that has fallen through the likes of using the Internet to their advantage. A new genre of professions were born: bloggers and vloggers.
I had a chance to interview some of the amazing contributors to this revolution whom have been deemed Tumblr famous.
thattallgirl2 and lavelaundry/what-do-i-wear are three Tumblr famous blogs that showcase inspirational fashion posts from day to day basis.
- BdeM: Tell me a bit about your blog? How many followers do you have?
thattallgirl2: My blog started off as a personal/random blog and as I explored Tumblr and saw what kind of different blogs there were and I started to post about something that I really enjoyed, fashion! I have a little over 3100 followers.
lavelaundry/what-do-i-wear: I started ‘lavelaundry’’ in September of 2010 on Tumblr, it was previously started on a Blogspot account in July of 2010. It really serves the purpose of being my daily inspiration board for colors, interior design, clothing design, and occasionally inspiring quotes. The original ideal when I started ‘lavelaundry’’ was to create a blog where I could review editorials and campaigns. I was essentially writing small stories in connection with the image as to what I though was taking place in them; it was more of a creative writing project but also where I could give me honest opinions.
‘lavelaundry’’ now is less of a writing board for me, and more a collection of images that showcase my idea of what beauty is to me - it’s farm more personal now then ever. My current follower count is 4,945.
I started my second blog ‘what-do-i-wear’’ on December 5th 2010; it was originally a private account where I stored outfit ideas, D.I.Y. inspirations, current trends that I want to challenge. After about a month I made it public, and it just started from there - People really responded to the content and constantly asked questions, started submitting there personal outfits in, emailing me with specific articles of clothing that they need help with. It’s really been an overwhelming experience, and I’m really thankful for all the positive feedback and opportunities that have come from it. I currently have a follower count of 71,055.
2. BdeM: Many people use Tumblr as a different persona, how much of your fashion blog actually reflects your own style?
Lavelaundry/what-do-i-wear: ‘lavelaundry’’ is all things that represent me in some way or another; it’s truly a collage of my interpretation of beauty and images that inspire me on a daily basis.
‘what-do-i-wear’’ is a more a reflection of current ideas. It can change depending on my mood, certain brands that I’m really in to at the moment, and what I think is interesting in terms of other bloggers and how they challenge styles. With that being said I hand pick all of the content that is uploaded and posted, I have to truly enjoy it, and find it inspiring or I wont post it, so I would say it is a strong representation of how I am and how I dress.
3. BdeM: Why do you think many aspiring fashion bloggers opt to start off with a Tumblr account rather than a Wordpress, Blogspot etc account?
Lavelaundry/what-do-i-wear: From my experience I started out with blogspot initially and then moved my way onto the Tumblr platform. I find that most of the blogs that I currently receive inspiration from are working off of the blogspot platform and have been for some time now, so I think it just depends on what appeals to you more.
4. BdeM: What would you like to show people through your blog?
thattallgirl2: I want to show people a few things; one is that everyone is beautiful! I post all different types of models including unique models like Daphne Groeneveld and plus size models. I also want to show that models are not just a pretty face but people who have incredible talent and that it is not easy to be a model! It takes a lot of practice and talent to know what poses are right for which types of clothing and other things like that.
5. BdeM: What sort of fashion posts do you find yourself drawn to the most? Editorials? Street fashion?
lavelaundry/what-do-i-wear: For ‘lavelaundry’’ it’s always been editorial based, and secondly interior design with also a few backstage shots of models.
‘what-do-i-wear’’ is very street style orientated, product shots, and focuses on promoting other bloggers that I feel share my general interest.
thattallgirl2: I find myself more drawn towards simple editorial type photos and polaroids, although it does depend on my mood. I like the idea that the editorials look very professional and the Polaroid’s are very simple and natural.
6. BdeM: Is there anything that disappoints you in regards to modern society’s thoughts/opinions/perspective on fashion now a day?
lavelaundry/what-do-i-wear: If I had to pick one thing I would love to change instantly about opinions or perspective on fashion and the industry, it would be only the limitations that people perceive it to have.
Especially in terms of women - so many women have written in to me on ‘what-do-i-wear’’ and have asked what type of clothing best suits my body type, or they will say something like really want to wear a certain type of clothing but there body type wont let them. It’s frustrating because if you want to wear something then you should regardless if it doesn’t fit the ideal standard that you have seen that garment in previously. If you’re 5’11 or 5’0 and want to wear a maxi skirt then you can, and should. I feel as though a lot of women deprive themselves from challenging certain trends or styles because it hasn’t been marketed to there body type. Sometimes you just need to go for it, there are always ways you can work a piece of clothing to fit ever body type.
7. BdeM: If there were only one sole reason as to why your followers are attracted to your blog, what do you think it would be?
thattallgirl2: I’m not really sure (laughs), but I would have to pick my posts. I would say that the majority of the blogs that follow me are fashion blogs. But also I talk to so many of my followers and really make a lot of friends on Tumblr and I am so grateful and thankful for that.
lavelaundry/what-do-i-wear: For ‘lavelaundry’’ I would have to say it’s because it offers a wide range of imagery, and content that is pleasing to the eye.
For ‘what-do-i-wear’’ I understand it to be because of it’s ever changing content, it’s aim to display all things current and styles that can be worn. “What-do-i-wear’’ offers a lot of awareness in terms of product and ways-to-wear different types of clothing.
BdeM: Thank You ladies for time and I hope that you find further success in your blogs!
